Brief description about this project.

This project is to find prospective source material for antioxidant and antibacterial agents.

Some people stray from the use of plants and herbal remedies, thinking them to be "old-fashioned". However, some studies have reported that traditional herbs, especially green tea, exhibit antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Subsequently, recent trends show that green tea leaf extract has been widely used as the active ingredient in various skincare products. Tea leaves contain polyphenols, which are responsible for scavenging free radicals and inhibiting oxidation. Nevertheless, the antioxidant effectiveness depends on the tea variety and its content. In this project, local green tea leaves from Indonesia were extracted using using ethanol and its antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH assay. The green tea leaf extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity with IC50 around 11.37+/-0.06 ppm. Furthermore, the ability of the extract in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms was evaluated using the well diffusion method. It was found to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus, with a maximum clear zone of 1.91 +/- 0.01 and 1.83 +/- 0.57, respectively (Figure 1). This data suggests that green tea leaf extract can serve as prospective source material for antioxidant and antibacterial agents.
